Utilizing vehicle traffic counters to ease traffic congestion.
Do you find yourself cringing when you have to hit the roadways during certain times of day? If it was possible to avoid rush hour traffic I’m sure most of us would. So what is being done to help reduce traffic congestion you may ask.
The Smart City Council stated that, “A smart city uses information and communications technology (ICT) to enhance its livability, workability and sustainability. It collects information about itself using sensors, devices or other systems, and sends the data to an analytics system to understand what’s happening now and what’s likely to happen next.”
Vehicle traffic counters are one of these technologies helping to combat the traffic congestion issue. By understanding vehicle traffic in certain areas, officials are able to properly plan everything from alternate road routes, widening of certain roads and timing of traffic lights.
Toll booths also utilize vehicle traffic counters on a daily basis. Government officials need to know the traffic levels of each toll booth to properly staff the booths and maintain the roadways. The data collected through toll booths also helps to determine the price of each toll for motorists allowing the state to make necessary repairs.
Facilities such as hotels, universities, municipalities, shopping malls and other businesses and organizations also benefit from vehicle counting technology. They are able to manage and route traffic within their parking lots easing congestion pains and preventing traffic jams and accidents.
Depending on your need and price point there are two common forms of vehicle counting sensors, Inductive Burial Loop and Pressure Hose vehicle counters. The Inductive Burial Loop is one of the most accurate vehicle counters available, it offers a dual counter for two lanes or directional counter for a single lane. The Inductive Burial Loop is also unaffected by vibrations in the environment and insensitive to changes in magnetic fields, foot traffic and environment conditions. The Pressure Hose on the other hand is great for temporary use and is portable because it is battery powered with no wiring needed.
City officials and business owners alike are working towards the same end goal, to reduce traffic congestion for motorists.
